First of all, I'm new here - hello!

I am in the process of buying one of the Mk3 2.0ltr manual diesels.  Whilst looking at the V5C of a 11 reg 163ps at an independent dealer I noticed that the CO2 emissions were stated as 152g/km rather than the 149g/km that I was expecting (or the 143g/km from the link pinned in this forum to the specifications).  This raises the car up a tax band and would cost me an extra £35 a year.  The tax disc confirms that the previous owners have been paying the higher rate. The dealer has agreed to investigate the issue on my behalf, but I am sceptical how far they will get.

So the question is; what does everyone else pay for their 163ps manual, and does anyone else have CO2 stated as 152g/km?

With a lot of googling I've answered my own question, and will post the answer in case anyone else stumbles across this. The Galaxy CO2 emissions were reduced with revisions introduced 2012.  So older 163ps (and 140ps) manuals are in Band G at £175, newer ones are in Band F at £140.  Interestingly all are Euro 5 compliant and there is no change in performance, so possibly a lightly revised engine map.

This can be seen by putting different aged cars into here and then checked against an old brochure.

Well done! That is why I dug deeper and went for th later version. Sadly the lower emissions don't seem to give any better fuel economy as it still comes nowhere near my old MKII Ghia. There do seem to be some annoying little habits on the one I've got so it might be interesting to compare. Mine struggles to get over 40mpg compared to nearer 50 in the old Ghia and I and others seem to have trouble taking off smoothly without stalling. It also has a tendency to pick up power without warning after accelerating to 30ish and levelling out.

Get as much info as you can and give it a good road test.

Ive just got a 13 2.0 TDCI 163 Powershift.

Brochure states 149g/Km but V5 and DVLA say 159g/Km

After lengthy discussions with Ford customer services, they are saying its a typo on the brochure.

Im not so sure, checking the DVLA site is says that they are all 159 after 2010 (assume thats the Powershift).

Everywhere I look (Ford/cars advertised on autotrader etc) all show this car as 149g/km, im convinced that the girl I spoke to at Ford had no clue what I was going on about and just said this to get rid of me! She even suggested I speak to the supplying dealer.

Even the invoice for the car states that 6 months tax is

Posted

I was going to suggest the same but I am unsure just what powershift actually means. When I was looking for mine the search for manual gears continually resulted in far more with powershift than manual.

I think it's all a scam anyway. How can a car which regularly does 55 mpg have the same emissions rating and tax group as on which barely manages 40 mpg at the same speeds. Also how can a car with an emissions rating of 139 regularly use 20% more fuel than one with a rating in the high 170s. If it's using more fuel then it must be producing more CO2 or worse still more CO. It can't be down to fancy emission reduction technology because burnt fuel produces carbon/oxygen gasses and they have to come out somewhere and emission ratings are CO2/distance travelled based. :23:  :23:

Who's kidding who?

The powershift and manuals are 149 and 139 respectively,

Hi Chris

I don't know.  I bought this Gal last October and it was 3 months old. I had to tax it from the time i bought it as the previous owner (lease company) had "un licenced" it.

I taxed it for 6 months and it cost me

This all getting very confusing. I understood that the modifications to reduce the emissions was applied to models post 2011 and that the lower figure was 149.

This is all getting a bit like the random speed restrictions and phantom road works appearing on many motorways, in particular the M42.

There is either a feindish plot here or we really do have lunatics running the assylum.

Dave and chris,

It seems that there has been a further update somewhere between March 2012 and 2013

Moving a bit sideways off topic. A 10gm/Km reduction is quite a big step for an engine which is already supposed to be pretty clean and if the conversion of fuel to energy and CO2 with minimum CO stays much the same It would suggest an improvement in MPG of much the same proportion so either someone at Ford is telling porkies or you should be getting more MPG. The manufacturer's figures for mine is 46 on mixed driving which seems to be a work of fiction but must have been based on something. I wonder what is specified for yours.

I managed to get 44MPG with my 2.0 163 powershift, but that was driving at 50MPH thru the roadworks on M1 between J28/32 (very very tedious!)

But we should be getting nearer 55MPG at those speeds, as you say their figures are pure fiction!

Hi Phil,

I think it turned up on Parkers Guide site but I found it through Google. I didn't check the others as I assumed that the 140 and 163 were rated as the same as claimed by Ford. I think that the link below should take you there. I'm having trouble with Windows 8 and my web browser since the last update. I think I'll go back to Win 2000. At least they've given up "Improving" that!
